Few things are more frustrating than WiFi that drops every few minutes. The cause is usually one of a handful of common issues — here are eight reasons your WiFi keeps disconnecting and how to fix them.
1. Weak Signal or Distance From the Router
If you’re far from the router or separated by thick walls, the signal weakens and drops. Move closer, reposition the router higher and more central, or add a WiFi extender or mesh node.
2. Router Needs a Restart
Routers can get bogged down. Unplug it for 30 seconds and plug it back in — this simple reset fixes a surprising number of dropout issues.
3. Too Many Devices
An older router struggling with many connected devices will drop connections. Upgrading to a modern dual-band router often solves it.
4. Outdated Router Firmware or WiFi Drivers
Outdated firmware on the router or old WiFi drivers on your computer cause instability. Update both.
5. Interference From Other Devices
Microwaves, cordless phones, and neighbouring networks on the same channel cause interference. Switching your router to a less crowded channel or the 5GHz band helps.
6. ISP or Modem Problems
Sometimes the issue is your internet provider or modem, not the WiFi. If devices on an ethernet cable also drop, contact your ISP.
7. A Failing Router
Routers don’t last forever. If yours is several years old and constantly dropping, it may be at the end of its life.
8. Computer Power Settings
Windows can power down your WiFi adapter to save energy. In Device Manager, disable “Allow the computer to turn off this device” for your wireless adapter.
