It’s a stressful moment: you press the power button and your laptop does nothing. Before you assume the worst, work through these six checks. Many “dead” laptops in Calgary turn out to have a simple, fixable cause.
1. Check the Power and Charger
Make sure the charger is firmly plugged into both the laptop and a working outlet. Look for a charging light. Try a different outlet, and if you have access to another compatible charger, test with it — a failed charger or cable is one of the most common causes.
2. Do a Hard Reset (Power Drain)
Unplug the charger, remove the battery if it’s removable, then hold the power button for 30 seconds. Reconnect power and try again. This clears residual charge that can cause a no-boot condition.
3. Look and Listen for Signs of Life
Are there any lights, fan noise, or sounds? If the laptop powers on but the screen stays black, the issue may be the display, the backlight, or the screen cable rather than the whole computer.
4. Disconnect External Devices
USB drives, external monitors, and accessories can occasionally prevent a laptop from booting. Unplug everything and try starting it with nothing connected.
5. Check for Overheating
If the laptop was very hot before shutting off, it may have an overheating or dust problem. Let it cool fully, then try again. Persistent overheating needs an internal cleaning — see our PC tune-up service.
6. Watch for Liquid or Physical Damage
Recent spill? Don’t keep trying to power it on — that can cause more damage. Liquid issues need professional cleaning fast; see liquid damage repair.
